Level Design

Below is a collection of images that I got whilst working on 2 different maps within Torque Drift 2. The initial images are all within the block-out stage using basic props to help get an idea of the world space. These were then iterated on and turned into the stunning maps that are currently in the game.

Blockout - Hakone

Final - Hakone

Blockout - Daikoku

Final - Daikoku

Easter Eggs are one of my favourite aspects of a Game, so naturally I had to include a few in Torque Drift 2.

Easter Eggs

Creepy Monkey

The Creepy Monkey Easter egg initially started out as an inside joke between myself and one of the former 3D artists. Whilst each map was in the final stage of development, I would go in and hide a monkey bobblehead prop somewhere in the map. I’d then send an ominous photo of the monkey giving a hint of where it was. He’d then have to go in and find it. It then started going around the office and got approval to keep the monkeys in the levels.

Since then and until I left, within every map in Torque Drift 2 (that I was there for) I was In charge of placing the Creepy Monkey in the game. Be on the lookout whilst playing because he is always watching.

I had written Lore and given the monkey statues a logical reason for being there, but due to time restraints and financial pressures, the creepy monkey storyline ended up getting cut.

LZ Compound Teaser

When the game initially launched, it only featured two maps. To generate hype for the upcoming “LZ Compound” map and spark conversation, I collaborated with an artist to create a billboard placed in Long Beach, which players would frequently drive past.

The billboard acted as a teaser, disguised as a fake airline advertisement. The price listed was the exact distance (in kilometers) from Long Beach to the LZ Compound, and it featured an in-game render of the new map. While I planned and concepted additional teaser billboards, they were not implemented due to time and resource limitations.

This is one of the things I’m most proud of within in TD2.
